Uterine Fibroid are non-cancerous tumors that form within the walls of a woman’s uterus. They usually form in various sizes; some can be as tiny as a full stop while some can get as large as the size of a grape fruit. Most women with fibroid never get to know they have one. Some get to discover the presence of fibroid during their routine pelvic examination and in most cases fibroid tumors causes no symptoms for some women but some usually experience heavy menstrual bleeding, bleeding between period, constant pain or pressure in the abdomen or pelvis, frequent urination, increased virginal discharge, lower back pain and pain during sexual intercourse.
Fibroid usually do not interrupt the menstrual cycle but they can cause infertility or miscarriage.Fibroid tends to form during a woman’s late thirties and early forties and shrink after menopause. Please do note that fibroid is not in any way associated with cancer and those not increase the woman’s risk of uterine cancer, so banish the fear of any linkage to cancer. There is no cause for alarm fibroid is a natural occurrence in every woman and it’s estimated that 20 to 50 percent of women of reproductive age have fibroids. The fluctuation in levels of estrogen and progesterone, the two main female sex hormones influences fibroid growth. However while all women produce estrogen, only some do develop the fibroidtumors. Fibroid is most common among African women. The causes of fibroid are still unknown but some factors can influence the growth of fibroid, which are as followed:
- Hormones: Estrogen and progesterone are the hormones produced by the ovaries. They cause the uterine lining to regenerate during each menstrual cycle and may stimulate the growth of fibroids.
- Family History: Sometimes fibroids may be genetics i.e fibroid may run in the family. If your mother, sister, or grandmother has a history of this condition, you may develop it as well.
- Pregnancy: Pregnancy increases the production of estrogen and progesterone in your body. Fibroid may develop and grow rapidly while you are pregnant.
Small fibroids do not necessary need any cause for panic or treatments. The big ones are the major problem which requires treatment from a physician or application of natural remedies.
Their positions within the uterus determines what they are called
• Intrauterine fibroids are located within the uterus
• Submucosal fibroids are located in the wall of the uterus.
• Subserosal fibroids are located under the serous membrane of the uterus.
So many cases of fibroid have stopped growing, shrunk or disappeared when alternative remedies are being applied.

Flax seed contains plant based hormones called phytoestrogen which are save alternative to synthetic hormones and decreases the effect of estrogen levels naturally by blocking the estrogenreceptors on the cells in fibroid and other estrogen-sensitive tissues. Also studies have shown that eating flaxseed helps the body reduce the production of unhealthy estrogens. The omega-3 fatty acid and fibre found in flaxseed helps reduce inflammations and tumor growth throughout the body, riding the body of excess estrogen.

Herbal essential oils like evening primrose oil, rich in omega 6 fatty acids: powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances, can reduce pain and inflammation of fibroids. Evening primrose essential oil is available in supplemental form at health food stores.#
11. Avoid High estrogen foods:
The estrogen hormone feeds the fibroid, that’s why it vanished with menopause. Most commercially sold food like red meat, poultry, dairy products, eggs contains synthetic estrogen, feed to them routinely for market purposes. These estrogen rich foods should be avoided thorough out the healing period or organic hormone free dairy, egg and meat should be used instead.

Food such as white bread and pasta increases insulin, there by changing the way estrogen is metabolized, creating compounds that are more likely to cause cellular inflammation and fibroid symptoms, including enhanced growth of existing fibroid.
13. Consume more fibre and soy:
Fiber helps the liver process and excrete excess estrogen, therefore high fiber foods like grains, beans, vegetable and fruits should be consumed regularly. Also I recommend you concentrate on soy beans products like soymilk, tofu and soy sauce. Soy is rich in natural estrogen called phytoestrogens, compound that are 100 times weaker than synthetic estrogen, so they do no harm to the body, but instead bind to estrogen receptor sites, preventing harmful synthetic estrogen from damaging your system.

- If your menstrual bleeding is so heavy and saturates your sanitary pad more often than an hour, please consult a health practitioner.
- If fibroid is found, please do not take oral contraceptives with high estrogen content. Because high estrogen birth control may stimulate the growth of fibroid tumors. And chances of developing fibroid will greatly decrease if the use of oral contraceptives are avoided.
