Most Effective Home Remedies for Heartburn and Severe Acid Reflux

In Home Remedies by Marvin Francis

Heartburn, also known as indigestion is a burning pain of discomfort that moves up from your stomach to the middle of your abdomen and chest. In some cases, the pain can also move into your throat. Irrespective of its scary name – heartburn doesn’t affect your heart. Heartburn is something that most adults will sure do experience during their lifetime, so there is virtually no reason to panic because it’s not a life-threatening condition. One may ask, how does heartburn come about? Heartburn happens when the Lower Esophageal Sphincter loosens up while your stomach is still digesting your food. The stomach acid travels back up into the esophagus causing inflammation, irritation, and scarring – this causes the narrowing down of the esophagus and food gets stuck there.

What are the real causes of heartburn? Some of our uber unhealthy lifestyles can lead to heartburn – like smoking, obesity, acidic and spicy foods. Acid reflux can also lead to heartburn. While most of us will prefer the usually quick fixes of over the counter medications, but it pays more to adopt home remedies. At least you know what you are taking into your system.

Here is the part where I tell you what to eat and what not to eat. I guess you already know that eating foods like caffeine, fizzy drinks, sodas are not good for your overall health. Eat more of fiber foods – this helps keep your digestive system healthy and fit. Eat smaller meals, let say – you eat five to six smaller meals as opposed to eating three large meals a day.

Below are my best Home Remedies for Heartburn and Severe Acid Reflux

Use Acidic Apple Cider Vinegar to Counter Stomach Acid

I know you might be wondering, how the hell does that work? ACV is known to be acidic – then I will have to take it to counter acid reflux? In this case, I think you should know that most times acid reflux is not always caused by excessive production of acids – but under production of acid can also lead to acid reflux. When your stomach fails to produce enough acid, the LES loosen itself, thinking that the digestion process is complete – because there is little or not acid left in the body. This action may lead to heartburn – when this happens, the usage of apple cider vinegar is needed. Don’t worry, below is the complete step by step process on how to use apple cider vinegar for acid reflux.

Get this
• 3 teaspoons or 1 tablespoon of raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar
• 6 to 8 ounces of fresh water

• Start by adding 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into 1 cup of water. Drink this solution before meal
• Note: If the condition deteriorate instead of getting better – please discontinue usage of apple cider vinegar.

Drink Aloe Vera Juice

Aloe vera is well known to have anti-inflammatory properties. Due to this property, it helps soothe inflammation in the stomach and esophagus – bringing relief from the effect of acid reflux. This particular remedy has worked well for me in the past – that’s why I strongly recommend it.

Get this
• Aloe Vera leafs
• 6 to 8 ounces of fresh water

• Start making your aloe vera juice
• With severe cases of acid reflux, drink a half cup of aloe vera juice before each meal. Alternatively, you can drink the juice first thing in the morning

Drink Ginger Root Juice

To be honest I find ginger more effective for acid reflux than most over the counter prescription. All you need to do is prepare your own ginger root tea. I have given the detailed steps on how to do this below.

Get this
• Slices of ginger root
• 2 cups of water

• Start by slicing up your gingerroot and simmer it in 2 cups of water. Pour the resulting mixture into a cup and drink the resulting mixture

Licorice for Soothing Relief in Acid Reflux

If you can lay your hands on Licorice, I strongly recommend you use it too. Most herbalist will recommend it too. Licorice is known to help decrease swelling and cough – it also does a great job in thinning of mucus secretions. There are also verified claims that it can help heal ulcer. There are two ways to use licorice – either you are using the root or you are using deglycyrrhizinated licorice root (DGL), both of which helps create a thin film of protective mucus that coats the lining of the esophagus – this helps to prevent stomach acid. To use licorice root, boil it in water to make a tea out of it. If you are using the (DGL) the suggested dose is two tablet – to be chewed 20 minutes before meals, three times daily. You can also take it shortly before bedtime if you suffer mostly from nighttime acid reflux.

Baking Soda

Baking soda contains a natural antacid – when taken provides much-needed relief from heartburn.

Get this:
• Baking Soda
• A cup of water

• Start by mixing one teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of water
• Gently drink this solution for instant relief
NB: If you have high blood pressure, keep away from baking soda as it contains sodium.

Snack on Almonds

One of the best ways to save yourself from acid reflux is to snack on almonds. Due to its alkaline property, it helps balance the body’s pH levels – thereby neutralizing the acid that causes the burning sensation in your esophagus.

Get this
• 3 to 4 almonds
There is really no specific guide to snacking your almond nut, just do it very often – after each meal, taking a walk or driving.

Eat an apple or banana

If you never ever want to worry about acid reflux, simply make apples and bananas you best friend. Apple contains fiber that helps absorb the acid produced in the stomach. To even take it further the dietary fiber found in apple can help cure indigestion. Bananas, on the other hand, contains antacid that counter acid reflux.

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea helps balance out the acidity in your stomach and also helps reduce inflammation. Before I go further – I will give you a recipe that works best for acid reflux. Below are the ingredients you need.

Get this:

• Petals of chamomile

• Take the cup away from heat and cover – let it steep for about 3 minutes.
