A certain woman came to me complaining on how she couldn’t seem to get rid of her wrinkle after breaking her bank to buy an expensive beauty product, which ended up doing her more harm than good. Looking at her face I could clearly see what seems to look like a map of Africa on her face – which was as a result of the adverse effect caused by this product. Now she’s not only battling with her wrinkle, but also battling with the scar the product left on her face. This event brought me to this subject of wrinkles and how to remedy it. You first have to know that wrinkles only form when the skin thins and loses its elasticity. Wrinkle occurs as a natural part of aging process, which is as a result of the weakening and breakdown of the collagen and elastin in the connective tissue of the skin, due to the changes in fibroblast that produces collagen and elastin. No matter what you do you will develop wrinkles if you live long enough. The first sign of wrinkles are usually around the eyes – smile lines or “crow’s feet.” Followed by the check and lips. Other factors also helps determine the rate and the extent of wrinkles – these factors includes diet, nutrition, muscle tone, habitual facial expression, stress, lack of proper skin care, exposure to environmental pollutant and lifestyle habits such as smoking. But do you know what I found out lately? Exposure to sun play a huge role on wrinkle appearing on your face – in fact, sun is your worst enemy. It dries out your skin and also leads to the generation of free radicals that can damage skin cells. The ultraviolet rays from the sun erodes the elastic tissues in the skin causing wrinkle to appear.
Diet Remedies for Wrinkles:
Most times what we get into our body can greatly influence the look and feel of our skin. It might also interest you to know that the food you eat plays a greater role in how fresh and supple our skin looks – than the costly product you apply.
Drink Plenty of Water
Most people only drink water when they are thirsty, if you are like this, I must tell you that you are going about it the wrong way. It’s imperative you drink at least 2 quarts of water even when you don’t feel thirsty. Doing this helps keep the skin hydrated and flush away toxins, while discouraging the formation of wrinkles.
Have Foods with Wrinkle Fighting Elements
Fatty acid should be obtained from cold-pressed vegetable oils – saturated and animal fats should be avoided. Also food rich in omega-3 fatty acids, trace retinol, iron, vitamin E and C and mono-unsaturated fat should be encouraged. These foods includes:
- Green Tea
- Yogurt and Kefir
- Dark colored fruits and vegetables
- Nuts like almonds, walnuts
- Legumes, beans and lentils
- Oily fish like tuna, salmon, herring and sardines
- Flaxseed and sunflower seeds and oil.
- Brazil nuts
- Whole grains like brown rice, whole wheat and oats.
- Green and white tea
- Soy foods (you should have them in moderation only)
Including all these foods in your daily diet will sure keep the wrinkles away.
Lifestyle Remedies for Wrinkles
Unhealthy lifestyle choice can greatly lead to the early development of wrinkles. So before you complain about wrinkle ask yourself, is your lifestyle healthy? You can’t smoke heavily and expect to stay wrinkle free. Below are some unhealthy choices we make that leads to early stage of wrinkle development.
Sleep Sufficient and Sleep Right
According to what I read on prevention.com – Estée Lauder, a cosmetics company teamed up with UH Case Medical Center to evaluate how sleep—or a lack thereof—affected the skin of 60 women. Turns out, those who slept only 5 hours every night for a month had twice as many wrinkles and spots compared to those who slept for 7 hours. They also recovered from sunburn significantly slower than those who clocked in more zzz’s. These findings were presented in May at the International Investigative Dermatology meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland. This shows that at night, energy and cellular functions focus more on repair and recovery in order to prepare the skin to defend itself against the environment the next morning. Which goes to imply that less sleep translate to less repair causing wrinkles over time.
I know of a colleague at the office, whom stressed herself more than necessary. I was shocked when I found out that she was just 22, but the wrinkles on her face made her look 35. A particular study was conducted in 2004 to show the link between chronic stress and aging. This study revealed that the telomeres (structures at the ends of chromosomes that shorten with aging) also shorten prematurely in people experiencing long-term psychological stress, in effect, prematurely “aging” the cells. Personally I believe that anything that gives you much stress is not worth it at all. If you job puts you into a great deal of stress, It’s time to get another job. I suggest you indulge yourself in work you love, follow your passion (if you have one), develop a hobby, read books, swim, do yoga, spend time with your spouse and children. Whatever it is that will take the stress away do for your own peace of mine.
Don’t Smoke; and avoid alcohol and caffeine
Smoking can greatly lead to wrinkles. It dries out the skin by upsetting the body’s mechanism for renewing the skin. Dermatologist says that long term smoking can lead to premature ageing. Researchers suspected that smoking disrupted the body’s natural process of breaking down old skin and renewing it.
Protect and Preserve Yourself from Wrinkle Forming Sources
You don’t have control over the natural aging process – but there are certain things you can do to prevent wrinkle appearing on your face prematurely.
Protect Skin from Harmful Sun-rays
Since ultraviolet ray from the sun can damage your skin collagen leading to wrinkles. The best advice I can give to you is to stay away from direct exposure of sunlight. If your job entails you stay under the sun, simply resign. If you must go under the sun wear a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 whenever going out under the sun, which is effective in protecting your skin against UVA and UVB radiation from the sun. I also recommend you go for enhance sunscreen containing vitamin E or soy isoflavones which shields and strengthens your skin by assisting the reproducing collagen. Strong sunrays can make you squint therefore leading to wrinkle formation around your eyes, so it pays to invest in good quality sunglasses – cheaper brands can damage your eyes. If you love hats, you are at advantage here, and if you can use the umbrella under the sun without feeling embarrassed, good. Anything that keeps you away from direct sun-light is ok.
Use Cosmetics with Care
If you read this piece from the beginning and you remember what I wrote about my encounter with a certain woman who damaged her own skin with over the counter skin care product. It saddens me that most of us still fall prey to these companies. We often break our banks to buy things that are unhealthy and damaging to our skin. If you must buy these products, try as much as possible to avoid the ones with alcohol in them. For instance alcohol based toning products should be avoided. Instead use witch hazel or herbal/floral water. Use coconut oil often to moisturize your skin; a skin lacking moisture tends to wrinkle fast. Avoid the use of concealer to hide wrinkles. Trust me they often make your wrinkles more prominent by settling themselves in the spaces in between your fine lines.
